Poni Abraham, who doubles as the producer and host of Pop or Spark with Poni, has spoken out following online backlash against the reality dating show. While welcoming criticism, she urged the public to remain mindful and understand that the show is part of a broader learning experience.
The dating game show “Pop or spark with Poni, which has been trending on social media since it first aired online, is designed to help single individuals connect, network, and potentially find real-life partners in a fun, structured setting.
In an exclusive interview, the communication specialist shared that the concept was inspired by similar programs she had seen abroad.
“The idea is not originally mine,” she explained. “It is something I have seen done in Nigeria and Uganda, and yes, even on Netflix. At first, it was a joke. But I thought why not bring it to Juba?”
Poni revealed that the show began with a public call for participants. However, many individuals withdrew after learning that it involved genuine on-camera dating experiences.
“I made a call. Many people showed interest, but after knowing the concept, they backed out,” she said. “So, my personal acquaintances agreed to be part of the show.”
Despite this, she emphasized that the door remains open for new participants.
“We are still welcoming anyone who is interested in joining the show,” she added.
Responding to online reactions, Poni acknowledged that public feedback has been both critical and encouraging.
“It had both negative and positive reviews. I’m taking it as a learning space,” she said. “But I’m not running away. I welcome criticism but be mindful.”
Despite the controversies, she confirmed that Pop or Spark will continue airing, with new episodes already in production. She also reiterated the eligibility requirements for those interested in participating.
“You have to be single or at least not have a ring on your finger,” she clarified. “If your partner is okay with you being on the show, then it’s fine.”
Poni further stating that launching media projects in South Sudan comes with challenges, but innovation must start somewhere.
“Things to do with media are not always pleasing. But we have to start somewhere,” she said.
Dating reality shows are a global phenomenon, popular for their mix of romance, entertainment, and social dynamics. Internationally acclaimed formats like The Bachelor, Love Island, Too Hot to Handle, and Date My Family (South Africa) have attracted millions of viewers and sparked cultural conversations.
In Africa, shows like Hello Mr. Right (Nigeria), The pan African dating show , and Kenya’s Perfect Match have explored unique local takes on love and relationships, giving viewers a glimpse into dating culture in different societies. These shows often face scrutiny but also play a role in normalizing discussions around relationships, modern courtship, and societal expectations.
By bringing Pop or Spark to South Sudan, Poni Abraham is contributing to that wider continental narrative challenging norms, opening conversations, and creating a platform for local entertainment to evolve.
